MyPCDrivers 4.0 review by Tara (Jan 30, 2014)
Data mining con job! Software is listed as "freeware" here and on other sites and there is no mention that half of the features described are paid features only, not until after you have already downloaded it and handed over personal information. If you want to download drivers you are asked to "register" ("register" doesn't equate to a paid service - how many of us have free email accounts where we all had to REGISTER our details to set it up!)... and then it takes you to a paid subscription page where there is "only one more step to go" which translates into "hand over your dosh". I appreciate that many freeware products have a premium paid version, however unlike the decent trusted freeware out there (such as avg) this product does not state until AFTER you have handed over your details that you need to pay - they con you by telling you everything it can do including downloading drivers etc, all of which is advertised under the banner of "freeware" with nothing to make it expressly clear that X is free but Y is a paid subscription or that the freeware version is only a lite version or that full version is available via the website or any such thing (I think I read on one site, after the fact, that updating drivers is a feature for registered users - but that didn't say that by 'registered users' they really mean 'paid subscribers'... sounds picky but it's these sorts of technical differences that can make the difference between artistic license and outright false advertising). Personally I refuse to use any product from any company that advertises as freeware but fails to be upfront and transparent about which, if any, features are paid only and does so after you've already given them valuable private marketing data they can make money off. The freeware features might be ok, and even the paid product might be ok too - but that doesn't mean that a company that behaves like a sneaky rat to suck you in is suddenly a company that should be trusted once you've taken the bait. Do yourself a favor and keep searching for a better product via a company with some advertising ethics, or better yet learn something new and go diy.
