RocketDock 1.3.5 review by Daniel (Mar 27, 2013)
While Rocketdock works in Windows7 64Bit, there is one bug that really annoys me.
*****The Stack Docklet systrem sees some icons, but not others.*****

* I have setup Rocketdock in its own directory under the Root C;Drive
* I have taken ownership of the whole folder (change permissions
* I have reset Icons using the Properties settings to reselect an Icon
(All of these actions are recommended by RocketDocket themselves or others who have the same problem.

Love the concept, but hate the bug

Well it is very good and I like it a lot but it has a strange bug with some applications open file dialog boxes. I have mine set to Always on bottom, placed at the Bottom of the screen and with the Popup on Mouseover feature.

I have Win XP Pro 32 bits and the issue is that when I'm opening a file with Photoshop CS4 for example when I'm selecting the type of file to open and scrolling down the list of file types with the cursor Rocket Dock pops up as if I had reached the bottom of the screen but the cursor is way, way off the bottom edge of the screen and it still pops up the same totally unwanted. Very, very annoying. And without the Popup on Mouseover feature I don't know how to call it on top of other applications to launch another program without having to minimize all the maximized applications and that can be very cumbersome.

This bug should be fixed and also another possibility is that the software creator adds the feature to bring it to the top with an assignable key combination and give users a choice with this of how to bring it to the top.

In addition it doesn't have tabs yet like Object Dock from Stardock or Tab Launcher (formerly sTab Launcher) which allows a dock to have many, many more icons easily, enough to virtually substitute the Windows Start menu.

I used Tab Launcher for quite a while because of this but it is nowhere near as cool or as neat as Rocket Dock or other similar dock type application launchers which are my favorite type and it has quite a few bugs and annoyances of its own that they haven't fixed in quite a while.

You can use a plugin like Stack Docket to add more icon launching capacity to Rocket Dock but this is not as fast or as neat as the way tabs work with Tab Launcher cause in Tab Launcher when you hover over a tab it automatically and instantly switches to that tab showing those other icons under that tab instead.

And with Tab Launcher when you click on its icon in the quick launch area if the program is already running it will bring the launcher on top of other windows but it is very slow to do this compared to how fast Rocket Dock does this when you place the cursor at the bottom of the screen (sometimes it takes several seconds in Tab Launcher!)

Also with the stack docklet in Rocket Launcher the icons are smaller than with the regular Rocket Dock icons, and they do not grow like regular icons either, you cannot see the whole icon labels under the icons and you cannot arrange the icons in the position that you want, only alphabetically or the like (only algorithmically) not like in Tab Launcher where you can place them in any order that you want by drag and drop and they just align correctly horizontally just like with the regular Rocket Dock icons which also allow this.

I think that with the tabs it would have so much more capability and another choice to be able to expand the icon capacity, one that would allow this while preserving the ability to arrange the icons as you wish, the big, easy to read and complete icon labels and the nifty animation features.

I've used Rocketdock for as long as I can remember - with XP, Vista, and Win7. It's one of the first apps I install after installing the O.S. It's a brilliant piece of software, extremely configurable, much better than using the Start menu, taskbar, desktop shortcuts etc. to run an app or other shortcut - and it's free!. I'm currently using v1.3.5. Incidentally, it even seems to work well with Win7 64-bit,although it's not supposed to. The only problem I've had is that it won't create a shortcut for the MSCONFIG utility. There may be other glitches with Win7 64-bit but I haven't come across any. I can't live without it!!
